The Chiliad Tour is a British motoring tv set serial,[ane] [2] created by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May, and Andy Wilman, made for Amazon exclusively for its online streaming service Amazon Prime Video,[one] [2] [three] and premiered on eighteen Nov 2016. The programme was conceived in the wake of the departure of Clarkson, Hammond, May and Wilman from the BBC series Top Gear and was originally contracted with 36 episodes over three years.[6] [7]

When the programme was launched, information technology followed a like format to that of Superlative Gear between 2016 and 2019, including car reviews and timed laps, motoring challenges and races, studio segments, and celebrity guests, with the team using a studio inside a large tent during this fourth dimension; in its first series, the tent was located at different locations across the earth, earlier taking a stock-still site inside the Cotswolds. Episodes were released weekly to Amazon Prime Video accounts, and repeats of the first series were fabricated bachelor on traditional broadcasters in tardily 2017.[8] At the conclusion of the tertiary series, the production team switched out of this format, and towards a focus on producing special motoring films for futurity series, with episodes released at select intervals.

The Grand Tour is released to viewers across more than 195 countries and territories,[9] attracting favourable viewing figures since its premiere episode,[10] and receiving positive reviews from critics.[xi] [12] [13] A video game based on the programme, entitled The Grand Tour Game, was released xv Jan 2019.[14] In July 2019, executive producer Andy Wilman announced that he and the production crew had extended their contracts with Amazon for two boosted years.[15] [xvi] [17] [18] [19] [xx]

Format [edit]

Series 1–three (2016–2019) [edit]

Throughout the commencement three series of the programme, the format was focused on a similar organisation to that of Top Gear, involving a mixture of pre-record television films - a mixture of single or multi-office films - and live-audience studio segments, though for legal reasons it was designed with significant differences to avoid clashing with the BBC's motoring series. Films focused primarily on automobile review, motoring challenges, and road trip journeys, oft based effectually those of Top Gear, such as a challenge in which the presenters take to purchase a class of vehicle and meet which is the all-time through a series of tests given through text messages from the testify's producer. Alongside these episodes, the programme's format betwixt 2016 to 2019 also included special episodes based around the Tiptop Gear specials, focused on the presenters travelling on journeys in a specific type of vehicle or class inside a foreign locale.

Similar Top Gear, car reviews on The One thousand Tour functioned in a similar style in which the presenters, either on their own or with their colleagues, have a look at various cars and test them out on various aspects such as performance, handling, and quality. Reviews are conducted in varying locales away, or within the United Kingdom, including a specially designed racetrack, parallel to the Top Gear Test Track, called the "Eboladrome". The track is not only used for reviews, only also for conducting timed laps of vehicles that are reviewed, except for ten cars which were timed outside of filming before the launch of the beginning series. Timed laps are conducted past a professional driver assigned to the plan - while the showtime serial involved former NASCAR driver Mike Skinner, who was contracted to operate nether the proper noun "The American" and portray a stereotypical redneck accent and viewpoints alongside scripted graphic symbol traits,[26] [27] the poor reception to his involvement led to him beingness replaced by British racing commuter Abbie Eaton for the second and third series.[28] [29]

Studio segments were primarily filmed inside a large studio tent that could business firm an audition of effectually 300,[30] with the presenters sat around a trestle table and the audience seated in front of them.[26] Initially, the first series involved these segments being filmed within a travelling tent that was set in diverse countries, with audiences caused from the local population at the site as part of an emphasis that the programme was on a "grand bout" effectually the earth.[26] However, Hammond's crash in Switzerland and Clarkson'southward pneumonia prior to the second serial, led to the use of a travelling tent beingness dropped in favour of a more fixed location, resulting in studio segments being filmed on the outskirts of Chipping Norton for the 2d and tertiary series.[31] These live-audience segments act as breaks between pre-recorded films, much like in Top Gear, and operated on a like format. Throughout all three series, the presenters often used a discussion flow on various topics within a segment entitled "Chat Street", which had a running gag of opening with an intro of the presenters in silhouette doing something comedic and/or unusual.

Celebrities were non initially role of the programme to begin with, due to concerns over legal issues that the BBC could heighten if it competed against the celebrity format used in Top Gear. As such, the programme created a humorous segment for the kickoff series entitled "Celebrity Brain Crash", which involved celebrities being "killed" in an accident while making their way to the presenter's tent - the segment was done for comedic upshot, and either involved an actual celebrity who was filmed briefly for the segment before their death is staged exterior the tent's location or with a look-akin, or involving someone representing them, despite not being clearly identifiable. This segment was later on dropped leading to the decision that celebrities would be a part of the programme for the 2nd serial in a new segment entitled "Celebrity Face Off".[28] [32] Much like Top Gear'due south "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car", the segment involved ii celebrities, who shared similar backgrounds or connections to certain elements (east.g. magicians) who competed against each other on a separate race track, to see who was the fastest, aslope conducting interviews with the presenters. The timed laps for this segment not but involved a different track, but also used a Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic coupe to create the lap fourth dimension.[33] The use of celebrities was subsequently dropped prior to filming of the third serial, to dedicate more time to films.[34]

The "Eboladrome" examination track at RAF Wroughton, used on The Grand Tour betwixt 2016 and 2019 for timed laps of reviewed cars.

The gravel course at Enstone Airfield, used on The Yard Tour for "Celebrity Face up Off", but only for the second series.

The Yard Bout race tracks [edit]

When the plan was first conceived and created, the production team opted for the creation of a dedicated exam track for the purpose of being used for reviews of testing of vehicles by presenters, aslope the establishment of lap times by cars that are reviewed. The runway was somewhen sited at the erstwhile RAF Wroughton airbase, with its layout consisting of 2 loops - ane big and one small - connected by a single stretch of tarmac between them and christened every bit the "Eboladrome", due to the design of the rails resembling the structure of the Ebola virus. The track was designed to "trip cars up" and included sections devised nether a humorous arrangement, such as "Isn't Direct", "Your Name Here", "Old Lady's House", "Substation" and "Field of Sheep". The track was dropped from utilize from the plan after the third serial.

For the 2nd series, the production squad decided to create a 2d track for the specific purpose of beingness used in the newly created glory segment "Glory Face Off". They somewhen decided to situate the new track at Enstone Airfield, close to the fixed studio tent location - a site originally planned for use with Top Gear.[35] The rail was mostly designed as an oval, with one-half of it involving a gravel track. The runway was dropped from use in the 2d series, although was briefly involved in a motoring challenge during the third series.

Series 4 (2019–present) [edit]

On 13 December 2018, Amazon announced that The Grand Tour had been renewed for a 4th serial. With this, Amazon and the team accept retired the electric current studio and audition format, including talk segments such as Conversation Street, runway and lap time content on The Eboladrome and other smaller features, in favour of films dedicated to road trips and adventure specials.[36] The new format focuses on these individual adventures which see the presenters travelling from ane location to another in a choice of vehicles they have chosen for the task, in a similar manner to the characteristic-length specials of Top Gear, though expanding beyond cars. The beginning special titled "Seamen", was set on the Mekong Delta in Cambodia and Vietnam and released on 13 Dec 2019.[37] [38] The second special, set in Réunion and Republic of madagascar and entitled "A Massive Chase", was originally set to be released on 18 December 2020, but released a day ahead of schedule on 17 December 2020.[39] [twoscore] A third special, called "Lochdown", was filmed in Scotland in Oct 2020 and released on 30 July 2021.[41] A fourth special, chosen 'Carnage A Trois' was filmed in the United Kingdom in early 2021 and was released on 17 Dec 2021.[42]

A fifth special was originally scheduled to be filmed outside of the Uk in mid-2021, still, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, travel restrictions meant this couldn't happen until March 2022, when filming for the 5th special commenced in Kingdom of norway.

Episodes [edit]

Production [edit]

History [edit]

Clarkson, Hammond and May had been presenters on BBC's Tiptop Gear, both as part of the rotating hosts of the original, and permanent hosts for the 2002 rebooted serial up through 2015. Under them, the show had an estimated worldwide audience of 350 million, and listed by Guinness World Records as the highest-viewed factual television plan.[43] Due to several incidents involving Clarkson, the BBC chose not to renew Clarkson's contract with the show in March 2015. Both May and Hammond affirmed they would not return to Pinnacle Gear without Clarkson, even though the BBC offered them lucrative salaries to remain on for additional series.[44] Along with their departure, their long-time producer and Clarkson'south classmate Andy Wilman also opted to exit at this fourth dimension.[45] BBC retooled the prove for 2016, bringing in new hosts Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc.

Before long subsequently his separation from the BBC, Clarkson stated his intent to start a new car testify, saying "I accept lost my infant simply I shall create some other. I don't know who the other parent will be or what the babe volition exist similar."[46] Rumours that Clarkson, Hammond, and May were developing a new testify through discreet meetings with various networks emerged starting in April 2015.[47] [48] These rumors pointed to a potential American broadcaster, every bit the terms of Clarkson's not-compete clause with the BBC stipulated he could not make a rival car show with a BBC competitor, such as ITV.[49] Among those that had been approached included Netflix, who felt Clarkson'southward team wanted too much money for what they were worth, and BT Sport, believing this prove would exist a better fit on a network with a more than global reach.[50]

In July 2015, Clarkson announced he had signed a deal with Amazon to develop a new car prove that followed a similar format every bit Peak Gear, with both Hammond and May joining him as co-hosts, and Wilman producing.[51] Other personnel from Peak Gear going to the new show included managing director Phil Churchward, the husband of Fifth Gear'due south Vicki Butler-Henderson.[52] [53] The deal included 36 episodes beyond three series which would be available to Amazon Prime members starting in 2016. Wilman stated that Amazon promised them to have the liberty they wanted to make the show how they wanted forth with the necessary upkeep. Additionally, by using a subscription-based service over an advert-based network, they would not exist appreciative to commercial pressure for their advertisers.[54] Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, said he was "very excited" about bringing this program to Amazon, and that producing the prove would be "very, very, very expensive", but added, "[Clarkson, Hammond and May are] worth a lot and they know it."[55] According to insider data reported by The Daily Mirror, Amazon paid GB£160 million for all three series.[56] Wilman denied the show toll this much, simply did acknowledge the evidence was costly, partially due to Amazon's intent to have information technology filmed in 4K resolutions.[thirty] The production of this show would be based in the Britain, and done by W Chump & Sons, a company gear up by Wilman, Clarkson, Hammond and May.[54]

The evidence's name, The Grand Bout, was revealed in May 2016. Clarkson said the name brought to heed the tradition of One thousand Tours, and reflected how the evidence would travel to several dissimilar countries to film.[57] There was speculation that the show could be called Gear Knobs after a trademark application was made for that proper noun by an associated company,[58] simply Clarkson stated in October 2015 that this would not be the title.[59] [sixty] He explained in April 2016 that the word "Gear" could not be used for legal reasons.[61]

Initially, the testify'south format was to present individual tv set films, using location shooting without studio segments.[62] [63] They later came upward with the thought of using a travelling tent to provide a mobile "studio", to continue with The G Bout proper name. They would be able to utilize local audience members, and would give the hosts the opportunity to explore the local civilisation around cars.[30] According to Wilman, the thought to film audience segments in a tent came from Clarkson, who had seen an episode of True Detective that took place at a Baptist revival ceremony.[thirty]

On 13 December 2018, while shooting the final episode for Series 3, information technology was announced that the show had been renewed for a fourth series.[36] All the same they would ditch the tent and release big budget car specials, on staggered dates rather than regular episodes.

Legal issues [edit]

Wilman said that lawyers for Amazon were very mindful of any perceived similarities in segments to Top Gear, requiring changes to the format and regular segments.[26] Named elements from Top Gear similar The Star in a Reasonably Priced Auto, the Cool Wall, and the Stig could not exist used at all, but they besides had to clear other legal concerns. For case, the lawyers said they could examination cars on a exam track, but they could not post the times using paw-written signs as they had done on Top Gear; instead, they used a digital leaderboard.[64] Wilman said that some of the lawyers' concerns "got funnier and funnier", such as whether May could say "cock", or whether during ane of their exotic roadtrips, if they could terminate and admire the scenery by saying "it'south beautiful" as they oftentimes did on Elevation Gear.[64]

Many outlets falsely reported that the BBC had explicitly told the coiffure they could non have celebrities come on the evidence and race around a track. This was after confirmed to be false, with the crew admitting that the real reason for the nature of the segment was a last-minute panic.[65]

"Celebrity Brain Crash" was replaced in series two by "Celebrity Confront Off" where two celebrities compete to be fastest around a track, fugitive the legal complications with the BBC.[66]

An episode was censored by Amazon Prime number Video in India because it included footage that could have been construed as offensive by the Indian audience. The footage showed a windscreen that was fabricated of a cow'due south body organs and removal of the footage resulted in a significant reduction in the length of an episode.[67]

For the second series, following Clarkson's pneumonia and Hammond's car crash, the producers decided that at that place would no longer be a travelling tent.[77] [78] Instead the tent would be in one location near Clarkson's domicile in the Cotswolds every bit this would be more convenient for the crew to operate. Information technology also would be useful for new features such as Celebrity Face up Off.[79] In September 2017, W Oxfordshire District Council gave planning permission for iii months of filming from a fixed tent location on the Great Tew Estate, nigh Chipping Norton.[31] Two-hundred parking spaces already used for hosting the Cornbury Music Festival on the aforementioned site would exist used to adjust 350 guests per week, plus 80 members of staff.[31] The time window allowed for the serial two filming was between October and December 2017.[31] For the third series, the tent was allowed to remain at the Great Tew Estate,[80] with filming taking place between Oct and December 2018.[80]

Nevertheless, BBC Arts Editor, Will Gompertz said of the opening that "there is no irony. It feels uncomfortably hubristic" simply once the presenters were in the tent "Normal service has been resumed" and that "It seemed to me that Grand Tour is a Telly show that wants to be – and quite possibly should be – a picture".[99] The Contained described The Thou Bout every bit "the all-time of Top Gear but with a greater budget".[100] TheWrap reported an estimate by Symphony Avant-garde Media that the opening weekend viewer count for The 1000 Tour was three times the size of the opening weekend of The Man in the High Castle.[101]

Episode 2 was somewhat less favourably received past fans and critics. The Telegraph wrote about the Jordan segment: "[...] a deadening activeness movie segment suggested that they were in danger of losing the run of themselves slightly and that Amazon'due south easily-off policy towards the production had potential downsides."[102] Radio Times said that "many of the viewers were disgruntled to say the least, branding the testify every bit tiresome and non funny."[103]

Kevin Yeoman of Screen Rant gave the show a positive review, stating "Fans tin rest bodacious Tiptop Gear hasn't gone anywhere, it'south just hiding out at Amazon under a unlike name."[12] Sonia Saraiya of Multifariousness was also positive of the show, stating "When it comes to the cars, The K Tour delivers gearhead porn in spades... Clarkson, Hammond, and May'southward honey for machinery... is still present, pure, and appealing, fifty-fifty with the shift in networks and formats."[104]

Conversely, in Apr 2017 Brad Anderson of CarScoops stated that he prefers Top Gear to The Grand Tour. Co-ordinate to Anderson, Tiptop Gear had "become even ameliorate", whereas The Yard Tour "seemed more scripted, less natural and at stages, forced... attention is frequently skewed away from the cars every bit the presenters, namely Clarkson, seemed to chase controversy and headlines". Anderson continues that in-studio segments became repetitive quickly, particularly "Glory Brain Crash", likewise noting that all three hosts seem to spend far also much time needling each other, and exam commuter Mike Skinner offers no worthwhile commentary.[105]

Digital Spy was positive of serial 2, episode ane, calling it "An understated premiere for a bear witness that feels similar it's finding its feet."[106] The Times was also positive, giving the testify four out of 5 stars, stating "Some parts of the evidence are flat merely mostly it works, the production values remain high and it has clearly been hit with a juggernaut of money."[107] The Daily Telegraph, while not equally positive, still approved of the episode, stating "The writing is all the same rather ropey. Clarkson's proffer of a new nickname for May – "Dingleberry Handpump" – failed to heighten a titter fifty-fifty amid the super-fans gathered for the London premiere" merely also said that "for each wobble, there are merely equally many moments when The Grand Tour manages the clever play tricks Top Gear could pull off at its best: raising a chuckle while sneaking in a bit of serious journalism at the same time." and ultimately gave the episode 3 out of five stars.[108] Jeremy Clarkson himself believed that they had "hit the ground running with series 2 of the Grand Tour".[109]

Controversies [edit]

Richard Hammond was criticised by Stonewall and Peter Tatchell for a comment he made in the 6th episode of the first series where he unsaid that men who consume water ice-cream are homosexual.[110] [111] It was later revealed that the comment may take been an in-joke for the Finnish audience as a reference to a controversial TV commercial that aired in Republic of finland many years earlier.[112]

Radio Times criticised the gender balance of guests on the "Celebrity Face up Off" segment during an episode, with Paris Hilton as the but female guest.[113]
